Winemaker James Hamilton decided during a surf trip to Portugal with his family in August 2015 that it was time to start using grapes from the family’s Kuitpo vineyard, planted by his father David in 1997, to produce wine under his own label. After 10+ years making wine for some of South Australia’s best known wineries, James had been itching to make his own interesting, low intervention wines that would showcase the versatility of the Southern Adelaide Hills wine region. Named after a long-running joke with his sister Zoe, Golden Child Wines was born in vintage 2016.

Golden Child Wines are of single vineyard origin, sourced from the Hamilton property in the Kuitpo sub-region of the Southern Adelaide Hills. Established by David Hamilton in 1997, the vineyard sits at 330-380m elevation and is only 15km inland from Gulf St Vincent. Cool winds funnelled up from the gulf lead to rapid afternoon cooling and this, combined with the high altitude of the vineyard, create perfect conditions for growing premium cool climate grapes. In addition to providing son James with fruit for Golden Child Wines, David has supplied grapes for almost twenty years to some of South Australia’s best known wineries.
