From Santorini to Nemea – Greece is the word

GAI'A LOGO

Gaia wines was launched in 1994 by agronomist Leon Karatsalos and oenologist Yiannis Paraskevopoulos with the release of their first
wine: Thalassitis, a modern and racy expression of Santorini Assyrtiko that took the world by surprise.

To this day they are still ranked in the top echelon of producers on Santorini and continue to bring indigenous Greek varieties to wine enthusiasts around the world.

SANTORINI – A VINEYARD WITH A UNIQUE WINE PRODUCTION AND ECOSYSTEM

Santorini is an internationally recognized region with a special ecosystem for the cultivation of vines. The volcanic porous soil, long hours of sunshine, lack of rainfall throughout the year, the sea mist and strong winds during summer create rare, precious and unique wines.

The vines are pruned in the traditional shape of ‘kouloura’ (basket) so the grapes are protected from the warm winds and intense sunlight of summer.

NEMEA – A BLESSED LAND

In 1996 Gaia acquired their own vineyards and built a brand new winery located near to Koutsi, Nemea – a semi-mountainous village.

The vineyards here are known for their chalky soils and good drainage. The cool temperatures, the ideal sun exposure and the steep inclination of the vineyards combine to produce lower yields than other parts of Nemea, but the berries have excellent concentration of flavour. Here they specialise in Agiorgitiko, the noble but generous red variety of Nemea.
