Margan Fordwich Hill Vineyard – An ancient & unique landscape
Published on: January 11, 2024

The Story of Fordwich Hill

Fordwich Hill was established by Lindemans in the 1970’s and Margan have been looking after the vineyard since the early 2000’s. The undulating site is on deep red volcanic clay, laden with dolerite (an igneous rock similar to basalt). Originally planted to Chardonnay at the bottom of the southern slope towards the creek. Shiraz and Semillon are planted in a gully with a mostly Eastern aspect. This allows the grapes to catch periods of high light intensity and low temperature, whilst avoiding direct contact with the afternoon heat. Delicate fruit profile, bright natural acidity and intense aromatics are the hallmark of this site, across both white and red wine styles.

Vintage 2024 Update

‘Twas the week before harvest… Penning this from beautiful, sunny Broke Fordwich, we are poised to get underway with vintage 2024. A dry winter and warm temperatures towards the end of August, saw a slightly earlier budburst than usual. Ideal Spring conditions (albeit a little dry) ensued and has setup what looks to be an incredible harvest. A dry, warm spring has limited yields by way of small bunches and berries. Whilst this makes for a lesser volume, it contributes to a higher quality of fruit, particularly for red varieties. As usual we have assembled a vintage team from far and wide. They will arrive over the next week, and we expect to be right in the thick of it in a fortnights time.

2022 ‘Fordwich Hill’ Semillon

Hunter Valley Semillon is lean and racy in its youth but develops texture and complexity with age. It also will reflect the origins of where it is grown. This one is planted on the dolerite soils of the Fordwich Sill which leaves its footprint by way of a richer and softer wine with more palate weight in its youth, as opposed to Semillon grown on grey clay or alluvial soils.

Lemongrass and lime peel dominate the aromatics, the palate is light and full of fresh citrus. A vibrant acidity gives this wine line and length, a key characteristic that we look for when classifying our White Label Semillon.

“From a 1ha block planted 1974 on red volcanic soil. Complexity rules from start to finish, diminishing the focus but adding length as the flavours come and go, and range from lemongrass to quince et al.”

2022 ‘Fordwich Hill’ Chardonnay

This is the inaugural release of White Label Chardonnay from the Fordwich Hill Vineyard, The vines were planted in 1970 and the vineyard site slopes gently towards the Wollombi Brook. The soil is a unique blend of red volcanic and river sand. The increased drainage and lower fertility of the site gives lower yielding vines and concentrated fruit with intense varietal characteristics.

Grilled peaches melds with fresh grapefruit pith and a savoury roasted cashew backbone.

Food Match:  Marinated Yellow Fin Tuna with summer gazpacho, cucumber & capsicum.

“Planted in 1974 on red volcanic soil, lightly pressed to a mix of new and used French oak 500L, 1500L foudre, and concrete for wild fermentation and partial mlf. Scores for its precision and length.”
