Papagiannakos Assyrtiko – 95 Points – Huon Hooke – “A beautifully made modern dry white”
Published on: August 1, 2023

Mesogaia, Attica. The blessed land of the famed Attica Vine. A land which is truly special, blessed by the gods and surrounded by the sea which protects and nurtures it. The fruit of this land is borne of soft winters and warm summers. From a soil which has the most perfect ingredients. The ideal environment for the cultivation of vines.

The Papagiannakos family have been involved in the Attica region since the 12th Century. It is in the last decades though, under the guidance of Vassilis Papagiannakos, that they have forged their own path, showing the world what the variety Savatiano is capable of.

Their winery and grounds are immaculate, and the design of the facility is nothing short of first class, however it is also Vassilis’ understanding and commitment to the variety Savatiano and their consistent work at growing and producing the finest examples of indigenous varieties, such as Assyrtiko, Malagousia and Agiorgitiko, that has stood them firmly at the forefront of the contemporary Greek wine industry.

2022 Assyrtiko

“Assyrtiko is perhaps most famous on Santorini, but it’s also grown in the cooler, greener northern parts of Greece, and near Athens, which is the source of this one. Papagiannakos is one of several Greek wineries Déjà Vû is importing.

With a light straw-yellow colour and an elusive nose of dried flowers, pepper and citrus blossom, the wine is light and crisp, dry and soft at the same moment, with good intensity and persistence. There’s a touch of finesse to it, helped along by the moderate (for assyrtiko) alcohol. The balance is completed by a subtle trace of phenolic grip.
A beautifully made modern dry white.”

Food: any simply cooked white-fleshed saltwater fish.

2022 Old Vines Savatiano

“This is mightily impressive in its youth. Textured and long on the finish, it has enough ripeness to deliver some flavor while remaining lively and refreshing. The structure lifts the fruit and allows it to linger.
It’s precise, clean and focused.”
