Ktima Biblia Chora, nestled on the foothills of Mount Pangaion near the village of Kokkinochori in the region of Kavala, is widely regarded as one of Greece’s most acclaimed wineries and a benchmark of modern Greek winemaking.

The estate was founded in 1998 by renowned Bordeaux-trained winemakers Evangelos Gerovassiliou and Vassilis Tsaktsarlis. Inspired by the region’s ancient viticultural heritage and exceptional terroir, they established an organically cultivated vineyard initially covering just seven hectares, which today extends to more than 80 hectares.

The name “Biblia Chora” translates from ancient Greek as “Land of the Sacred Vine”, reflecting both the area’s deep-rooted connection to viticulture and the estate’s philosophy of expressing terroir through wine. The vineyards lie at approximately 380 metres above sea level on the cool-climate slopes of Mount Pangaion, where mountain air and sea breezes encourage slow ripening while preserving freshness, structure, and aromatic intensity.

Organic farming practices have been followed since the winery’s inception, with sustainable cultivation methods designed to respect the environment, local biodiversity, and human well-being. In 2001, a modern state-of-the-art winery was completed, and the estate’s first wines were vinified later that same year.

From the moment its wines were released in 2002, Biblia Chora rapidly established itself as one of the most exciting names in Greek wine. The estate produces a range of estate-grown and estate-bottled wines from both indigenous Greek and international grape varieties, combining precision winemaking with the distinctive character of the Pangaion ecosystem.

Among its most celebrated wines is Biblia Chora White, a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Assyrtiko that has often been compared to fine white Bordeaux — a reflection of Tsaktsarlis’ studies under the legendary Denis Dubourdieu, widely regarded as one of the pioneers of modern white Bordeaux winemaking. The estate’s Areti Red was the first Agiorgitiko produced in Macedonia, helping to establish a new trend for the variety in northern Greece, while Areti White offers a notably aromatic interpretation of Assyrtiko.

The estate is also recognised for its innovative Biblinos wines, produced from a rare unidentified indigenous grape variety discovered in the region in 2002 and subsequently propagated. These wines exemplify Biblia Chora’s enduring commitment to exploring, preserving, and showcasing Greece’s rich viticultural heritage.
