KUMEU RIVER

The story begins in 1938, when Maté Brajkovich left Dalmatia, Croatia, for New Zealand. Six years later, the family purchased a modest farm in Kumeu, laying the foundations for one of New Zealand’s defining wineries. The turning point came in 1982, when Maté’s son, Michael Brajkovich MW—the first New Zealander to earn the Master of Wine title—took charge of the estate alongside his siblings Milan, Marijana and Paul.

Burgundy has always been the reference point, never the blueprint. Kumeu River’s wines possess an identity entirely their own. The range follows a familiar Burgundian hierarchy, progressing from Estate Chardonnay to the single-vineyard wines, yet each site expresses a distinct personality. Maté’s Vineyard delivers the broadest shoulders and greatest structure. Coddington is generous, ripe and almost hedonistic in youth. Hunting Hill, planted on distinctive iron-pan soils, is the intellectual of the trio: taut, floral and persistent.

The vineyards themselves explain much of the style. Deep clay over sandstone retains moisture naturally, making irrigation unnecessary even through Auckland’s warm summers. Surrounded by the Tasman Sea and Pacific Ocean, temperatures rarely become extreme, with summer highs seldom exceeding 30°C. Maritime humidity is managed through meticulous canopy management and the estate’s distinctive Lyre trellis system. Every bunch is hand-picked, while the dry-farmed vines are encouraged to root deep into the clay, drawing both resilience and complexity from the soil.

If the vineyards provide the raw material, Michael Brajkovich’s winemaking allows it to speak. Chardonnay is whole-bunch pressed directly to French oak, where indigenous yeasts ferment the juice before around 11 months of lees ageing. Every wine undergoes full malolactic fermentation, yet the resulting wines are defined by precision rather than buttery excess.

Michael’s influence owes as much to curiosity as conviction. Time spent in Burgundy sharpened his understanding of barrels and élevage, while a visit to Jean-Pierre Moueix at Château Magdelaine in Saint-Émilion gave him the confidence to abandon cultured yeasts in favour of spontaneous fermentation long before it became fashionable.

“We hand-pick everything, whole-bunch press directly to barrel, ferment with wild yeasts and allow every wine to complete malolactic fermentation,” Michael explains. “Extended lees ageing gives texture, but we’re careful to avoid exaggerated buttery flavours.”

Part of that restraint comes from an unusual approach to lees management. After fermentation, the lees are separated, gently oxygenated to remove reductive sulphur compounds, then returned to the wine for extended ageing. It is an almost invisible intervention, the sort of invisible detail that ultimately defines the wine in the glass.

These are not Chardonnays built for instant gratification. According to Paul Brajkovich, they scarcely begin to reveal themselves before eight years of age. Give them another decade and they become something else entirely: less New World, less Old World, simply Kumeu.

The wider wine world has long since caught on. Kumeu River has appeared repeatedly in Wine Spectator‘s Top 100 Wines of the World, while a series of now-famous blind tastings saw its Chardonnays eclipse some of Puligny-Montrachet and Meursault’s most celebrated names. Few wineries outside Burgundy have earned that comparison so consistently—and even fewer have justified it.

The estate’s talents extend well beyond Chardonnay. Kumeu River also produces outstanding Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and several other varietal wines, all crafted with the same meticulous attention to detail. Today, the family farms around 30 hectares of estate vineyards in Kumeu and supplements production with fruit from approximately 10 hectares managed by long-standing grower partners. In 2017, the estate expanded beyond its historic home with the purchase of Ray’s Road Vineyard in Hawke’s Bay, producing Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc from this promising new site.

Blending Burgundian inspiration with a uniquely New Zealand sense of place, Kumeu River continues to set the benchmark for Chardonnay in the Southern Hemisphere. After decades of thoughtful refinement, the estate has risen above comparisons. The Brajkovich family didn’t set out to recreate Burgundy. Instead, they established one of the world’s great Chardonnay estates on entirely their own terms.
