MIKRA KTIMA TITOS
Nestled at the foot of the Paiko mountain range in Central Macedonia, near the historic town of Goumenissa, Mikro Ktima Titos is surrounded by ancient oak forests along the banks of the Sirios River. Meaning “Small Estate of Titos,” the winery was founded in 1972 by Titos Eftychidis, who planted four hectares of vines with indigenous varieties such as Xinomavro, Negoska, and Limnio, alongside Cabernet Sauvignon and Viognier.
A close friendship between Titos and Evangelos Gerovassiliou would later shape the estate’s future. After Titos’s passing, Angeliki Eftychidi entrusted the winery to Gerovassiliou, and in 2018 Mikro Ktima Titos officially became part of Ktima Biblia Chora under the direction of Evangelos Gerovassiliou and Vassilis Tsaktsarlis.
Today, the estate focuses on wines that reflect the character of the PDO Goumenissa appellation, working mainly with the local varieties Xinomavro and Negoska, grown according to organic farming principles.
Goumenissa, built at the foot of Mount Paiko along the Sirios River, lies 40 kilometres from Kilkis and 75 kilometres from Thessaloniki. Quiet and deeply tied to its natural surroundings, the area has long been known for its winemaking tradition. It is also the only PDO appellation in Greece that legally requires a blend of Xinomavro and Negoska for its red wines, with Negoska making up at least 20% of the final blend. The regulations also require the varieties to be co-fermented and the wine aged in oak for a minimum of 12 months.
After a manual harvest at the end of September, the grapes are co-macerated and co-fermented before aging in oak barrels. Negoska softens Xinomavro’s naturally firm tannins and high acidity, giving the wines a rounder, more generous character that sets Goumenissa apart from neighbouring Naoussa.
