It is difficult to understand Corsican wine without understanding its instinct for independence, and few embody it more completely than Yves Leccia. Long regarded in France as the “Rolls-Royce” of Corsican winegrowers, Leccia, alongside Antoine Arena, helped place Corsica firmly on the global wine map and remains one of its leading ambassadors today as chair of UVA Corse. He was also among the first on the island to bottle single-vineyard wines and champion a revival of Corsica’s heritage grape varieties.

Raised in Patrimonio, Corsica’s most distinguished appellation, Yves learned his trade beside his father among vines rooted in some of the island’s oldest and most complex soils. After initially working alongside his sister, he established his own domaine in 2004 to focus on what he considered Patrimonio’s greatest site: E Croce. Perched above the Gulf of Saint-Florent, this singular terroir combines thin chalk soils with deep schist bedrock, producing wines of palpable tension and minerality. Today, Yves and his wife, Sandrine, who comes from a family of Alsatian winegrowers, cultivate 18 hectares in Patrimonio, home to many of Corsica’s finest vineyard sites.

Practising organic viticulture since 2013, the domaine converted fully to biodynamics and received Demeter certification in 2023. Yves and Sandrine undertake much of the labour themselves. The viticulture is meticulous, yields modest, and harvest decisions exacting. Nothing feels hurried; nothing cosmetic. One senses throughout a desire not to manufacture flavour, but to reveal place. That same restraint defines the cellar. The whites are whole-bunch pressed and vinified in neutral vessels, while the reds are destemmed and raised without oak influence. From the outset, Yves eschewed oak, preferring the wines to speak purely of grape and site. Fermentations proceed with wild yeasts.

Across the portfolio, brightness and drinkability remain constant themes. Corsica is one of France’s sunniest regions, yet these wines carry none of the heaviness Mediterranean climates can so easily invite. Yves credits the altitude, the limestone and the marine winds. Perhaps, too, it is something cultural: that mountain instinct for austerity and tension.

Few French regions have changed as rapidly over the past generation as Corsica. Once regarded as peripheral, it has become one of the country’s most compelling frontiers of fine wine. Producers such as Yves Leccia are the reason why. Last year, the domaine received its second star in France’s leading wine guide, further cementing its place among the country’s finest estates.
